Speaker Biography
Steven Boyack
Preparedness Expert, Author
Steve Boyack picked up the prepping bug at an early age, growing up loving the outdoors, learning and teaching skills to others that would help them thrive in challenging environments. With his four boys, Steve served as a Scoutmaster and Scouting leader for over 25 years, going on over 500 nights of camping and untold miles of hiking, backpacking, biking and canoeing. All these things gave him a love for the outdoors and experience in how to survive (and thrive) in different circumstances.
Steve and his wife Merrilee lived over 30 years in California where they raised their sons before moving to Utah. It was while living in California that Steve experienced events that led him to understand the need for being more prepared for emergency situations. While in California some of the major events that occurred there were:
6.9m Bay area earthquake – 10/7/89, 63 killed, 3,754 injured, $10B.
Rodney King LA riots – 4/92, 63 killed, 2,300 injured, $1B damage
6.7m Northridge earthquake – 1/17/94, 57 killed, 9,000 injured, $40B
Cedar WildFire – 11/5/03, 273,246 acres, 15 dead, 2,242 homes
Witch Creek fire – 10/21/07, 197,990 acres, 2 dead, 1,265 homes
These and other disaster situations built upon one another, teaching lessons and giving additional experiences about what to do (and especially, what NOT to do) to prepare to weather a disaster scenario. Through experience and research, Steve distilled best practices and fundamentals that he has used to prepare himself and his family and to teach to others.
Steve has served in various roles as a preparedness expert and is currently the preparedness specialist for his LDS stake in Lehi. In addition, Steve is an NRA Firearms Instructor, an Utah State Concealed Firearms Instructor, an Advanced Open Water certified SCUBA diver, and a professional photographer. Steve is currently working with his local CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) as the Assistant Director and he volunteers with the Police Department in his community. Steve loves the outdoors and camping. He and his wife Merrilee have visited 58 of 63 National Parks and are working to see them all.
Steve wrote a preparedness book for the GenZ or millennial age, to help them understand why preparedness is important and what they can do about it because we are only as prepared as are the least prepared among us. https://a.co/d/1JYSIDF
Steve’s mission is helping others work on being better prepared for emergency situations. Believing it is not a matter of IF they might happen but rather WHEN they will happen.
